Breaking the sound barrier

August 14

Imagine not being able to hear the birds chirping in the trees, the roar of the ocean, or the joy of your children’s laughter.

That is what life was like for Tauranga nurse Josie Calcott, who lost her hearing at the age of three, due to chickenpox.

But five years ago she was given the gift of sound when she received a cochlear implant, which enabled her to hear her three children for the first time and understand speech without lip reading.

The implant not only gave her hearing, it gave her confidence – she found herself becoming more outgoing and sociable, and less frustrated.

Her friends are now fundraising for a second implant, so she can improve her quality of life even more.

The ‘Give Josie an Earful’ campaign was launched just three months ago, and has already raised $7000 towards the $40,000 needed for Josie’s second cochlear implant.

On August 22, we are lucky to have Josie sharing her story with us at our Wonder Women speaker series.

“Wonder Women is about inspiration, friendship and support. We believe wonderful things happen when women come together, and Josie’s journey embodies all these qualities,” says Lyon O’Neale Arnold co-director Denise Arnold.

Our second speaker for the evening will be Tegan Arnold, who has recently returned from the United Nations Ocean Conference in New York, which she attended as part of the Aotearoa Youth Leadership Institute. The high-level conference discussed the decline in health of the world’s oceans and how this could be reversed.

Tegan is unable to be with us on the night, but will be sharing her experience with us via video. Her insights come on the back of Plastic Free July and are sure to be very sobering for those of us who live in this coastal paradise.
